If you assign this task to your team, make sure you understand

  • What they won’t be doing as a result of taking on this job. Will it hurt the business or lead to a loss in revenue?
  • How much they cost per hour. Making chatbots is a high-value job, but it does not require a highly-trained or highly-paid person to do it. It involves more experience than mopping the floors but doesn’t require an advanced degree or years of experience.

Those who are often tasked with the job of creating chatbots are in the “marketing specialist” job level range — someone with 2-5 years of experience, a bachelor’s degree, and some technical ability.

According to Glassdoor, marketing specialists earn, on average, $50,528/year.

This article provides you with a clear outline for creating a chatbot proposal and RFP response. In situations where chatbot services are part of a larger proposal, the information here will help you understand how to integrate chatbots into your proposal.

What follows is a template that you can use for your agency’s chatbot proposal.

Before we dive in, a few points of clarity:

  • This chatbot template does not provide all the copy for you to use. Instead, you’ll understand what you should write. We believe that writing the proposal copy is something that your agency should do in house in order to make it as personal and unique as your agency is.
  • This chatbot template does not include pricing details. To get some insight on pricing your chatbot, check out the pricing discussion in this article.
  • Throughout the template, I use the term “client” to refer to the potential client. Might as well be optimistic.

The chatbot strategy or blueprint is the heart of the proposal. That’s why it should come first. The objective of the chatbot strategy is to explain to the potential client exactly how you will help them achieve their goals. The chatbot strategy ties your services directly to the challenges that the business is facing.

Important note: You cannot create a chatbot strategy unless you have had a conversation with the potential client. The strategy section includes specific information that they’ve provided to you such as (for example) their average order value, primary traffic sources, highest-converting channels, etc.

Pro tip: Use bullet points in this section. They’re easier to read, and the proposal will have a high degree of forward momentum.

In a few bullet points, summarize some key metrics about their business — their web traffic, primary marketing channel, and features that might differentiate them from the competition. Make this positive

  • Example: Company’s Facebook Page has 1.3 million likes and high engagement.

In a few bullet points, focus on the client’s pain points.

Why did they come to you? What is hurting the business? If possible, use real numbers to dial in on their problems so they can feel them.

Our Objectives

List, in bullet points, what your chatbot services will do. Paint this in terms of results, not deliverables. Use real numbers if possible, but don’t overpromise. If you think that you can improve something by 50%, then tell them 25%. Underpromise and overdeliver.

  • Example: We will decrease Facebook Ad CPA (cost per acquisition) by 35%.

Action Plan | 2-5 Pages

In this section, you will discuss the deliverables that the client will receive with your chatbot services.

Tell your prospective client what they will receive and how it addresses their challenge. This is the longest section of your chatbot strategy discussion and will go into detail regarding your approach, plan, and solution.

A smart idea here is to include screenshots of your deliverable.

For example, if your action plan includes creating an appointment scheduler for a dentist’s office, then put an image of that chatbot right in the proposal. When the client visualizes their potential product, it increases their eagerness to accept your proposal.

  • Example: Schedule Appointments: Customers will be able to schedule a cleaning or dental service automatically through Messenger.

Pricing | 1-2 Pages

Your pricing page should come right after your chatbot marketing strategy. From a psychological perspective, it makes sense.

Bullet out the price points with clarity. Make sure you list all the expenditures, including your monthly optimization and maintenance service, or any additional spend based on audience volume.

Discuss your philosophy, perspective on chatbot investment, etc.

List the prices.

Example:

  • $2,997 for building and deploying 1 Messenger appointment scheduler, 1 chatbot funnel (including Zapier integration to your CMS), and 1 website chatbot.

Final Notes

In this section, add in any special notes about refunds, intellectual property ownership, or other terms that should be an important part of the pricing consideration.

Pro Tips

  • Instead of “pricing,” you could use a term like “Your Investment.” Sure, some clients might see this as gimmicky. We all know that it’s about spending money. At the same time, “investment” better connotes the fact that they will be profiting wildly from this expenditure.
  • Use price anchoring. The first number that the client sees should be face-palming high. This is not the actual cost of your service. Why? Pure psychology. It’s called anchoring and is a cognitive bias that helps the client understand they are getting a really good deal. For example, in the leadup to your pricing page, you could mention something like “Businesses of your size typically spend more than $50,000 on a chatbot strategy.” Later, you tell them that the cost of your service is only $10,000. Instantly, the client’s mind is flooded with positive endorphins and a growing acceptance to such a good deal.
  • Add a guarantee. A lot of agency owners get skittish about guarantees. I understand. However, you may want to consider it. Obviously, you don’t want to eviscerate your profit margins, but it’s fine to assure them of some level of success.

Terms and Conditions | 3-10 Pages

Contracts and proposals should come with legal language to protect both you and the potential client. Add your standard agreement to this section.

Sales Material | 2-10 Pages, Optional

Most of the time, you’ll send your proposal after you send sales material — the information about your business, your service, etc.

However, if you are responding to an RFP, you should include all of this information since the client may be seeing it for the first time.

This proposal does not include a full explanation of everything that should be in your sales material, here’s a general idea of what to include.

  • 1-2 Pages – About your company, your people, key personnel, and your mission
  • 1-2 Pages – Information about the services that you provide
  • 1-2 Pages – A discussion of what sets you apart from the competition, an overview of your process, and how you achieve success for your clients.
  • 1-2 Pages – Case studies
  • 1-2 Pages – Endorsements

Now that you have the bones of an amazing proposal, let’s answer a couple of common questions.

How should I send my chatbot proposal? Email? Fancy online form? Paper made out of trees? Fax?

First off, what’s a fax?

Second, whatever works best for you and your client.

I’m a fan of sending simple proposals — basic documents with clear instructions. But I also like electronic versions that look pretty and work well.

The important thing is to have a system for creating and sending these. Efficiency is key.

What’s the sequence of sending a proposal, an RFP, etc. How does it all work?

This depends on your funnel and lead generation strategy.

Typically, the process works like this:

  1. A prospect reaches out for information.
  2. Your agency gets on the phone with the prospect for a discovery call. This is where you gather as much detail as possible regarding the client’s business, challenges, and desired objectives. The outcome of this call should be the client’s openness to reviewing your proposal.
  3. You send the proposal.

Chatbot Proposal Pro Tips

  • Sending something quickly is more important than making an uber-personalized proposal. Creativity, branding, color scheme, and personal touches are great! Don’t ignore them. However, you should prioritize speed over those creative and personal touches.
  • Set clear expectations. The client should know exactly what to expect from you in terms of communication, deliverables, and timeline. Make this absolutely apparent in your proposal.
  • Never send the proposal (blueprint and pricing) without a personal confirmation.
  • Everything should be an easy yes. Make it easy for clients to agree to the information and proposal without having to dig around for additional information or answers to common questions.

Here’s how to create a chatbot even if you don’t code.

If you’re only working on one Facebook page, then things are kind of simple.

4. Open up the Bot Builder.

When you start making chatbots, you’ll be spending a lot of time in the chatbot builder.

Let’s open it up and start looking around.

There are two options when opening the bot builder — dialogues and Q&A.

Dialogues are the heart and soul of chatbots — asking questions, providing options, delivering content, basically, anything that a chatbot does.

Q&A involves a method of teaching your chatbot what to do when faced with certain keywords. For example, if a customer is interacting with your chatbot and mentions price or cost, you can program your chatbot to respond with pricing information.

To use the Q&A feature, you’ll have to create dialogues that are triggered based on certain keywords.

So, we’re going to work on dialogues (not Q&As in this post).

5. Open the Dialogue Bot Builder.

When you open the bot builder for the first time, you’ll see a pre-built Welcome Dialogue.

This is meant to make your life easier.

Basically, we could stop here and you could go tell your boss, “I built a powerful chatbot, yo.”

That took five minutes, tops.

You’ll obviously want to do a bit more to customize things and make this chatbot your very own. Let’s take a look at the dialogue builder to see what’s what.

Don’t get overwhelmed. At first pass, there’s a lot to take in with the chatbot builder.

It’s divided into four main sections:

  1. The main menu, which is always the left sidebar no matter where you go in the app
  2. A list of all your chatbots. You can organize them according to folders and even search through all your dialogues. The more you create, the more important this will be.
  3. The main chatbot building place. This is where you craft your dialogues, piece by piece.
  4. The right side of the screen includes an option to test your bot in Messenger or just copy the link. The Q&A section allows you to build keyword prompts to open up the chatbot.

To give yourself more room to work, you can always tap that purple slider in the lower right corner.

Okay, time to get into some real chatbot creation.

I’m going to be starting from scratch. The chatbot builder probably already has a default welcome dialogue all made up for you.

To delete it and start from scratch, simply click the trash can icon above any widgets until you’re down to nothing. We’re doing this from scratch!

6. Add a Quick Question Widget

Widgets are the chatbot building blocks. To create a chatbot dialogue, you’ll have to add widgets.

It’s all about the widgets.

There are fifteen of them:

  1. Attachment – add a downloadable file to your chatbot
  2. Attribute – Create an attribute which will be used to define audiences or actions
  3. Email – Automatically send an email with your bot
  4. Form – Create a chatbot form for the user to fill out
  5. Gif – Add an interesting gif to the chatbot
  6. Gallery – Feature a gallery of images, products, etc., with titles and descriptions
  7. Image – Show a picture in the chatbot
  8. List – Create a list of items or images, for example with a menu or product listing
  9. Navigate – Provides functionality that prompts a specific dialogue
  10. Tag – Add a tag to easily track and sort your chatbots
  11. Text – Add some simple text to your chatbot
  12. Typing – Makes it appear as if the chatbot is taking a few seconds to type a reply
  13. Video – Add a video
  14. Zap Connection – Integrate with any of your Zapier triggers and connections

7. Add your quick question with an attribute.

Since we’re creating a welcome dialogue, the question is intended to draw the user into a conversation.

Type your question and add an attribute. Attributes are things that the bot builder will automatically add based on what it knows about the user.

This includes things like the user’s name, gender, time zone, etc.

It’s a good idea to personalize your chatbot by including something like the user’s first name.

8. Save the user’s answer by creating a new attribute.

MobileMonkey will automatically save a list of these answers. Set up a new attribute by clicking the new attribute button and naming it.

9. Add an input type for the user’s answer.

“Input type” means what kind of answer you want from the user.

You have five choices:

  1. Multiple choice – The user selects their answer from options that you create
  2. Free form text – The user can type whatever they want to
  3. Location – The user can send their location with a single tap
  4. Email – The chatbot automatically populates the answer with the user’s email and they tap to send it.

For this example, we’re going to use multiple choice. Multiple choice can include just a single choice or as many as you want. To answer the quick question, users will tap or click the response.

10. Create multiple choice answers.

Click “Add Answer” to start creating the answer to the multiple-choice question.

I like to add images to my answers. It just makes it look more interesting. Click the small image icon to the left of the answer box. You can select an image file from your computer. This image is going to be a tiny thumbnail so don’t go for anything really detailed.

Type in your answer, and create as many choices as you want to.

Each answer is, obviously, going to lead to something else. That something else is another dialogue.

Essentially, what you’re doing is creating a branching menu, where one option opens another conversation or dialogue.

I’m going to go through this one a lot quicker since you now have a handle on the basics of the bot builder and how to add widgets.

To create a new dialogue, simply click “add dialogue” in the dialogue menu.

The first thing you’ll do is name your dialogue.

Once you’ve added a name, you’re back to creating a dialogue from scratch.

My dialogue will help the user get in touch with an agent.

First, I’m going to show a nice picture to hold the user’s attention and provide some visual interest. I selected the “image” widget.

This is a quick question that has one answer — ”yep.” I do this simply to get confirmation that the user wants to go down this path. (This can eliminate tire-kickers and time-wasting leads.)

Next, I add another quick question and select the input type as email.

Next, I use the typing widget. This will simulate typing for two seconds.

Next, I get the user’s phone number. You can do this using a quick question with phone as the input type.

Pro tip: The email and phone input type are magic. It takes the normally tooth-pulling process of getting a phone number or email address feel effortless.

To hand over their precious phone number, all the user has to do is tap the pre-filled box with their number. Tap. Boom.

Throw in the fact that you’re in a conversational widget, users feel a lot more comfortable providing information that might not be as forthcoming if they were, say, filling out a form on a landing page.

Then, another quick question about their communication preference. The input type is multiple because there are two possible answers — phone or email.

One page or less

Your summary statement is one of the most important components of the marketing proposal because it’s at the beginning and because most major stakeholders will at least glance at it. You’re basically telling the client that you want to get married and you hope they say “I do.”

One to three paragraphs that address the following points

  • The reason why your client originally reached out to you. You want to tie it back to the pain they felt when they submitted the contact form on your website or picked up the phone and gave you a call. Poke at that.
  • The problem they are facing. Reference that pain again by describing how they are losing money or time, how they are missing out on something important, and how that won’t change unless they work with you.
  • The solution that you are proposing. Teasing them with the solution is fine. Don’t throw platitudes or cliches in here, but reference the work that you do and the identical (and successful) work you’ve done in the past for clients like them.
  • The outcome that you will deliver. Don’t just focus on numbers. Focus on feelings. Obviously, you probably don’t want to promise a better night of sleep, but you can suggest that your solution will be “100% outsourced,” “easy,” straightforward” and “seamless,” which is almost the same thing.

  • Keep this section brief. You want your client to be able to capture the gist of the marketing proposal template in one to three minutes.
  • Stay casual. This is a personal note. Keep the tone light. Marketing proposals often contain stiff, awkward, and formal language. Look, you’re probably not a lawyer and neither is your client. Just act natural. And write like it, too.

Follow a four-point outline to describe your marketing solution:

  1. Problem Statement – what is the client dealing with that you can solve? One paragraph/
  2. Strategy Solution – what will you do that will solve this problem? 5-15 bullet points.
  3. Deliverables – what are the specific things you will give or do. E.g., 12 chatbot sequences, ongoing support for 6 months, etc.
  4. Results – the kind of success and joy that the client will experience as a result of working with your marketing agency

Three tips. Here they are.

1. Explain your specific strategy with the client in concrete terms.

Some agencies might think “we don’t want to give away our secrets! Especially if they haven’t paid us yet!”

I’m here to say give away your secrets. A client will be more compelled by a clear strategy than she will with a vague promise.

Explain exactly how you’re going to achieve the client’s goals. You don’t want the client to hand back your proposal saying, “Can you explain how you’re going to solve our problem?”

Tell them. Upfront.

2. Drive quickly towards solutions.

The “solution” should be just that — solutions.

Too often, this section goes off the rails with the following mistakes:

  • Vague promises. The language gets salesy. The clarity wafts away. And the client is thinking “But will they?”
  • Getting stuck in the weeds of methodology. Most clients could care less about your Ahrefs wizardry or your MobileMonkey skills. As important as those are, spend less time talking about how you’re going to solve the problem and more time describing what the solution will be.
  • It’s too long. In most cases, the client’s problem can be solved in one page of a proposal (so to speak). If it takes more than that, eyes will glaze and minds will wander and…adios client.

3.  Use quick, bite-sized bullet points for this section.

This is pure tactic.

Use bullet points.

Client brains will praise you. I’m just as eager as the next guy to read Atlas Shrugged, but paragraphs consisting of 81 lines don’t fly with a marketing proposal.

Summarize your solution into a few succinct bullet points, and you have a higher likelihood of the client 1) reading your proposal, 2) understanding your proposal, and 3) accepting your proposal.

Investment

One page listing the price and payment terms.

“Investment” is code for “give us money.” This is the money section in which you will explain exactly how much it costs and how you expect your fee to be paid.

All you need here are two sections:

  • Price – how much it costs. Keep it simple. A number is all you need.
  • Payment terms – when and how they need to pay your fee.

  • Place this section on its own page (or slide, if you’re using slides). Clients will be rabid about seeing this section. Most of the time, this is all they care about.
  • Don’t pretend that you’re giving them discounts. Often, I see the pricing section reveal all kinds of false discounts — a few subtraction problems followed by wow! a lower number than they were expecting! Leave that for negotiation. Stand by your price and leave the subtraction problems for third-grade math class.

Timeline

One page describing when the client can expect to receive deliverables and see results.

This section outlines — again using bullets — the dates (and times if applicable) by which they can expect two things:

  • The deliverables
  • The results

Trace these out with as much bullet-point simplicity as possible.

  • Tell them exactly when can they expect results. Every client wants to know the answer to this question, when will we see results? Be as straightforward as possible in answering this question, but by all means, answer the question!
  • Commit to your timeline. This power tip gets a bit ahead of the game, but I plead with you to stick to your dates. All the talk about projects missing deadlines? It’s abnormal for a company to actually delivery by expected dates. Be that company.

Team (optional)

One or more pages (depending on the size of your team) with headshots, titles, and descriptions of each team member.

This section is extra. It can help, especially if you have some heavy-hitting luminaries on your team — names and reputations that are recognized and admired in your local market or niche.

Now, don’t panic! I’m not telling you to roll up your Messenger marketing or put a fork in Messenger broadcasting altogether. I’m just making a simple request — ease up on the Facebook Messenger broadcast messages.

Yes. I have my reasons. And no, I’m not upset.

My purpose in this article isn’t just telling you to stop doing something. It’s a strategic explanation of how to start doing something smarter, better, and more effective. And it starts with understanding Facebook Messenger broadcasts, what’s changed, and what you need to do.

First off, let’s make sure we know what Facebook Messenger broadcasts are.

As it turns out, I’m not against Facebook Messenger broadcasts in toto. I’m against doing it for the wrong reasons.

But there are some really good reasons to chat blast. I’ll explain each of them.

Subscription Message

Subscription messaging is available to pages that have applied for and been approved for it.

What kind of messages can you send?

Broadly, there are three main types of messages you can send under subscription messages. Facebook calls them “eligible use cases” and describes them thus:

  • News: Integrations whose primary purpose is to inform people about recent or important events, or provide information in categories such as sports, finance, business, real estate, weather, traffic, politics, government, non-profit organizations, religion, celebrities, and entertainment.
  • Productivity: Integrations whose primary purpose is to enable people to manage their personal productivity with tasks, such as managing calendar events, receiving reminders, and paying bills.
  • Personal trackers: Integrations that enable people to receive and monitor information about themselves in categories such as fitness, health, wellness, and finance.

When sending a subscription message, you’ll simply select “Subscription Message” when categorizing your message from the chat blaster. 

This entire process becomes seamless and easy when you do it using MobileMonkey.

But I still want to send promotional messages!

Good! You should want to. After all, we’re in marketing! How can you even market unless you’re promoting something?

Using a Messenger Chatbot to Message a Facebook Group:  What You Need to Know

Directly messaging a Facebook group is not an actual feature either of MobileMonkey or Facebook Messenger. There’s no such thing as a Facebook Group Chatbot, unfortunately. 

We all wish this were the case.

It would be amazing if you could whip up a message, toss it into a chatbot dialogue, and send it off to a group.

We get variations on this question all the time:

  • How do I make a chatbot for a Facebook group?
  • How do I create a Facebook group chatbot? 
  • Can I connect a chatbot to a Facebook group?
  • Can you add a chatbot to Facebook chat group?

You can’t do it quite like that. There is no direct solution, only workarounds. 

Broadly, it works like this. You must first invite Facebook group members to connect on Messenger. Once they are Messenger contacts, then you can send them bulk messages, chat blasts, Messenger broadcasts, etc. 

Let me make a quick aside about chat blasts or broadcast messages. These messages must be non-promotional in nature. No offering coupons or inviting people to your Bargain Basement Blowout Sale. Before you can send chat blasts, Facebook must approve your Page for subscription messaging. 

Here’s what you’ll need to create a Messenger Chatbot for a Facebook group:

  1. A MobileMonkey account
  2. Your own Facebook group or business page
  3. Awareness of how to create Facebook ads (Just the basics are fine)
  4. A little bit of ad budget (even $5 a day is fine for starters)

So, what is the process for inviting your Facebook group members to connect on Messenger?

There are 3 really cool (and surprisingly easy) ways to do it.

1. Chat blast your Facebook group by asking group members to become Messenger subscribers.

One of the most effective ways to introduce group members into your Messenger contact list is to ask these group members to become subscribers.

The way to do this tactically is as follows:

  1. Create a chat dialogue in MobileMonkey inviting group members to subscribe.
  2. Post the link to this in your Facebook group.

Let me walk you through that process.

Create a simple dialogue that makes the request.

Here’s what it looks like in MobileMonkey.

There are two elements in that Dialogue — the Quick Question and the Multiple Choice answer.

Notice how I’m making a straightforward and personalized ask — “Hi Daniel, want to connect on Messenger?” 

I provide only one answer — the right one. YES. 

That’s it. Once they click the yes, they’re in. Boom. 

Test this dialogue yourself to see how it works. 

(Go ahead, please. Try out the link above. It will make much more sense if you do.)

Notice how once you tap or click YES in the dialogue, it automatically sends you another message: “Thank you for subscribing. Type [STOP] or [UNSUBSCRIBE] to unsubscribe at any time.”

This is important.

Just as you want to make it easy for people to subscribe, you also want to make it easy for them to unsubscribe. 

If subscribers don’t know how to turn off your chatbot — e.g., by typing STOP — then they might block you. And if too many people block you, then Facebook will impose messaging limits on your page. (This happened to us one time.

So, the basic concept is this:  ask for subscribers and you shall receive. Easy stuff.

Hot tips:

  • Don’t just drop the link and leave it. Say some nice things. Include an image and throw in some emojis for good measure. 
  • Instead of posting this link in the main page feed, pin the post. This way, you make sure that your group sees it (and hopefully clicks it.)
  • Offer something nice. As an exchange for group members opting in, offer them a free something — a mention, a link, a promo share, whatever. A little sugary sprinkle never hurt.

2. Chat blast your Facebook group by adding a comment guard (autoresponder) to an organic Facebook post.

(I personally love this one.)

Comment guard” is the MobileMonkey nomenclature for a Facebook post autoresponder.

What you do is add a chatbot to a Page Facebook post using the MobileMonkey comment guard. When people comment on that organic post, they automatically receive an autoresponse inviting them to become a Messenger contact.

Brilliant!

It’s the Rumpelstiltskin of Facebook — spinning precious contacts out of mere commenters!

To be clear about it, you cannot use Comment Guards in group posts. But you can use a Comment Guard on your Facebook Page, which will target many of the same people who are in your group. Thus, you are effectively targeting group members to become Messenger subscribers.

The process of setting up a comment guard is self-explanatory and simple.

The real sizzle of this process comes when you elicit more and more people to comment on your organic post. After all, the more people who comment on a post, the more contacts you’ll stack up in Messenger.

Here are some ways to do just that.

Hot tips:

  • Make it a quiz. Ask people a question, and then have them comment their answer. Promise them the correct answer after they comment. You can send it to them automatically in the chatbot dialogue. Brilliant!
  • Comment with a gif. Gif comments are all the rage. Ask people any rando question, and have them answer with gifs.
  • Boost the post. With a few dollars expenditure, you can add even more Messenger contacts this way. 
  • Answer with predictive text. Tell people to complete the sentence with predictive text. “When I got to work, I saw….” “My boss is such a….” “I really, really hate…” “It tickles when…” This kind of thing is addictive. (I bet you’re probably wanting to type those sentences on your phone right now just to see what’s going to come out!)

3. Chat blast your Facebook group by creating a Click-to-Messenger Facebook Ad that invites Page fans to become contacts on Messenger.

With this method, you’ll create a click-to-messenger ad that targets fans of your page. These people have the closest proximity to group members, giving you the best chance of getting them to become Messenger contacts.

The goal here is to get your group members to message your Page, thereby growing your subscriber list.

(Facebook does not provide targeting options for groups. Targeting only works for Pages. Page-level targeting is as best as you’ll get.)

Here we go.

Go to Ads Manager and click Create to make an ad.

Create a new Campaign, and choose the “Messages” objective.

1. Facebook announced a desktop app for Messenger.

At F8, Facebook’s annual developer conference, Asha Sharma, Facebook’s Director of Messenger Consumer Products announced that — yes, at long last — they have created a desktop app!

Facebook has had a Windows desktop app for Messenger for a while. And there have been Facebook Messenger Desktop apps before now, but most of them were made by third-party developers.

Facebook now plans to release their own version of the Facebook Messenger desktop app.

2. Why did Facebook decide to make a Facebook Messenger desktop app?

Explaining the decision, Sharma explained, “People want to seamlessly message from any device, and sometimes they just want a little more space to share and connect with the people they care about most. So today we’re announcing a Messenger Desktop app.”

And really, it’s just practical and convenient. Have you ever used Slack on the web? Compared to the desktop version, it’s atrocious. If there will be any comparative improvement with Facebook Messenger, that’s worth getting excited about.

The likely and probable reason is their recent massive shift towards the primacy of Messenger.

How to Survive the Messenger Marketing Armageddon: 7 Power Moves

Last week, Facebook announced sweeping changes to its Facebook Messenger policy.

To sum up the change, any Business Page that is not approved for subscription messaging can no longer send chat blasts to their subscribers. Instead, these Pages can send sponsored messages.

In wake of this change, we’ve assembled a tactical survival guide — seven things you can do right away to make sure that your Facebook Messenger marketing comes through unscathed.

(NOTE: This article applies to marketers whether they are approved for subscription messaging or not.)

Here’s the bottom line: MobileMonkey users wield enormous power when it comes to every aspect of Facebook Messenger marketing. If anything, Facebook’s policy change empowers the full force and capability of MobileMonkey chatbots. If you’re not yet a MobileMonkey user, it’s a critical time to start creating chatbots.

1. Apply for Facebook Subscription Messaging immediately.

This is the most important point.

Facebook dropped the no-chat-blast hammer only on pages that are not yet approved for subscription messaging. If you’re not yet approved, your first approach should be to request approval.

To request approval, go to your Facebook Business Page.

Click “Settings,” then “Messenger Platform.”

The approval process for Facebook Subscription Messaging is not automatic and does not happen quickly.

2. If you are approved for subscription messaging, continue to do so. (Just follow the rules.)

The reason Facebook made this decisive change to the Messenger policy was that subscription messaging was being abused. Too many businesses were spamming their contacts with ultra-promotional content in direct violation of the rules.

Because subscription messaging has been and remains a beta feature, Facebook was taking a moderate stance on enforcing the no-promotional content rule. This is now changing. Facebook has announced that they will more strictly enforce the no-promotional content rule.

Going forward, please be aware of and abide by their guidelines.

What are those guidelines? Here’s Facebook’s five-point explanation:

  1. Cannot contain promotional content.
  2. Must adhere to the Messenger Platform’s subscription messaging policy.
  3. Only contain content that falls into one of the subscription messaging policy’s eligible use cases (news, productivity, or personal trackers).
  4. Must include the NON_PROMOTIONAL_SUBSCRIPTION message tag in the body of the request.
  5. The bot must adhere to all Facebook Platform policies and community standards.

The salient points are 1 and 3.

However, on point 1, “promotional content” can be a bit vague, so it’s better to analyze any message according to what Facebook allows — point 3. Your message must fit into one of three categories known as “eligible use cases.”

  • News: Integrations whose primary purpose is to inform people about recent or important events, or provide information in categories such as sports, finance, business, real estate, weather, traffic, politics, government, non-profit organizations, religion, celebrities, and entertainment.
  • Productivity: Integrations whose primary purpose is to enable people to manage their personal productivity with tasks, such as managing calendar events, receiving reminders, and paying bills.
  • Personal trackers: Integrations that enable people to receive and monitor information about themselves in categories such as fitness, health, wellness, and finance.

When creating a subscription message in MobileMonkey, the app reminds you of these policies.

3. Diversify your chat methods.

If you’ve been relying on the chat blaster as your primary method of communicating with your contact list, start using alternate methods.

The chat blaster is amazing, and you should keep using it, but it’s important to try these methods as well.

We aren’t entirely clear on if (or when) Facebook will roll back more features or start charging for them.

It’s obvious that Facebook is turning Messenger marketing into a major revenue stream. If diverting businesses to sponsored messages is any indication of a trend, then we as marketers should make sure we’re using the Facebook Messenger tools that are still available.

And we should do so now.

4. Embrace the 24+1 rule.

The 24+ 1 rule states that you can send contacts promotional messages in the first 24 hours after they engage with you. Plus you can send them an additional message after the 24 hour period.

This is Facebook giving you free engagement.

Embrace it.

In other words, take advantage of the 24-hour period to send messages to your contacts in order to generate their interest and impress upon their memory your company’s message. You can send a two-to-three message drip campaign with upsells or other calls to action. These are powerful techniques!

Obviously, you don’t want to message them to the point of annoyance, but you do want to make your presence known.

Your goal during this 24-hour period isn’t necessarily a conversion, although that’s great.

Your goal is engagement. And Facebook is giving you the ability to engage them with promotional content.

The first 24 hours after the initial creation of contact is the golden hour of marketing. That’s why retargeting experts turn on retargeting efforts instantly. The contact’s interest is as high as it’s going to get but plummets precipitously as time goes on.

Strike while the iron is hot.

And, to that point, the next tip is a powerful move that will sustain engagement.

5. Use the quick question widget to keep contacts engaged.

If within the 24-hour promotional period, your contact engages with a bot, it resets the 24-hour clock.

All you need to do is keep the engagement active and you’ll be able to retain the contact indefinitely.

The most effective method of engagement that we’ve used is the quick question widget.

The quick question facilitates engagement by making it ridiculously easy for users to respond. All they have to do is click or tap their response — one tap and they’re in.

Your quick question should be really, truly quick. It can be a stupid question like “Do you like unicorns?” The only possible answer to that question is yes.

Another unicorn hack for the 24+1 rule is to launch a drip campaign. Drip campaigns are excellent methods for continuing engagement and prolonging the 24-hour promotional message allowance.

6. Build your contact list.

Constant list building is a crucial component of ultra-successful Messenger marketing. And the most successful way to grow your contact list on auto-pilot is to turn on as many methods of list building as possible.

Here’s a quick overview of the six methods we recommend for list building:

  • Facebook Comment Guards — Anyone who comments on an organic Facebook post is invited to join your contact list.
  • Chat widget — Anyone who visits your website has an option to join your contact list.
  • Share links — Create a link that you can embed in an email, ad, website, etc., to funnel people directly into a Messenger sequence.
  • HTML Elements — Create HTML code to embed in an email or website for contacts to activate your chat widget.
  • Landing page — Customize a simple landing page that invites users to join your contact list.
  • QR code — Create a QR code that invites contacts to join your list.

Look, there’s nothing wrong with sponsored messages.

I’ve heard desperate cries of “digital fascism!” ripping across the digital marketing landscape, but it’s really not that conspiratorial.

If you can’t send promotional messages for free, then sending them with Facebook’s blessing for a small cost is actually a good deal.

Let’s break down some numbers:

  • The approximate cost for 1,000 messages sent is $20 (2 cents per send!)
  • The estimated open rate for these sponsored messages is 80% with a CTR of 20%.
  • Thus, the estimated CPC would be $0.12 per click.

That’s not bad at all. Considering that a decent Facebook campaign is running at $3-5 per click, sponsored messages are like getting a 97% discount!

Sponsored messages are not the Great Evil. They are a good marketing option.

There are eight specific things you need to know. For each one of these points, we’ve provided a brief takeaway for marketers.

1. Facebook’s Focus is on Facebook Messenger

A huge portion of the conference was given over to one subject — Facebook Messenger.

Over the past few months, it has been apparent that Facebook is shifting much of their developing power and marketing prowess towards Messenger.

During the conference keynotes, speakers held nothing back in promoting, enhancing, and pushing Messenger to the front of the conversation. Facebook Messenger is the future of Facebook.

Ever since its beginning, it’s been common to describe the Facebook app as Facebook’s “core product.” Now, it looks like that is changing. One of the biggest shifts, described in number two below, is that the crumbling News Feed is giving way to a more intimate news feed-style approach, but one that is part of the Messenger app, not the Facebook app!

Facebook Messenger is Primary

All of this is good for marketers. If you’re a MobileMonkey user, you’re aware of the nuclear power of Facebook Messenger marketing. Mix in some carefully-crafted chatbots, and the world is your marketing oyster.

Facebook knows this — that businesses stand to benefit from the increased status of Messenger. Heck, they engineered it to be so!

Takeaway: Facebook Messenger marketing continues to be the area of strongest marketing opportunity for the foreseeable future. Be sure to take advantage of the power of Facebook Messenger chatbots, Facebook Messenger tools, Facebook Messenger ads, and other Facebook Messenger hacks.

2. Messenger is being redesigned as a dedicated place for close connections.

Messenger will become almost like a secondary social network, but one that is only for close friends and family.

The second tab within Messenger will contain a feed (of sorts) that has only information and updates from close friends and loved ones. This is the new place to share status updates, view stories, and hold watch parties.

Takeaway: Customers will most likely be spending far more time within Messenger than before, devoting their time in the app to interacting with their closest connections. Businesses using Messenger chatbots have the inside track to interacting with customers within this more personal social experience.

3. Facebook Messenger is getting way faster.

Facebook calls it Operation Lightspeed — the mission to make Facebook Messenger a faster and lighter Facebook tool. The updated Messenger app will take up less space, require less battery, and boast improved reliability.

Takeaway: Messenger will have an improved user experience, causing users to use it with greater frequency and longer duration. Businesses gain an advantage since their potential customers will have higher levels of engagement, leading to more successful Facebook Messenger marketing.

4. Messenger will have end-to-end encryption by default.

Facebook has had some privacy debacles in the past, but they are working hard to move past those mistakes and create an intensely private future.

To that end, Messenger will have default end-to-end encryption by the end of the year.

Takeaway: With end-to-end encryption, Messenger users will feel more secure on the app, and thus will transfer that feeling of security to the businesses with which they engage.

5. Messenger users can message contacts on WhatsApp and Instagram (and vice versa).

We already knew this, but it’s still cool to get excited about it. After all, this move radically expands the reach of all three messaging platforms.

Takeaway: It’s clear that businesses have massive potential with the move towards interoperability. It’s unclear what this actually looks like in praxis. Either way, it will be important for marketers to understand and gain familiarity with all three platforms.

6. Messenger is getting a desktop app.

Finally! WhatsApp has had one for a while, and now it’s Messenger’s turn.

Messenger’s desktop app might be a latecomer, but it will be a welcome addition to Messenger’s functionality.

Takeaway: The new desktop app may change how people use and interact with the app, possibly increasing the time that users spend or the way that they engage. Marketers should use the desktop app as soon as it’s available to experience the look and feel of how customers will be interacting with messages.

7. Messenger will provide businesses with lead generation templates in Ads Manager.

Advertising is getting a whole new lift with the addition of lead generation templates for businesses. These will be available in Ads Manager. Businesses can create Messenger ads that drive customers to a Messenger Q&A sequence, thus segmenting customers and giving customers a superior experience with that business.

We’re making it even easier for businesses to connect with potential customers by adding lead generation templates to Ads Manager. There, businesses can easily create an ad that drives people to a simple Q&A in Messenger to learn more about their customers

Takeaway: We have a lot of questions about technical details, but we can be certain that Facebook wants businesses to succeed with customers in the redesigned Messenger experience.

8. Messenger will natively support appointment booking with businesses.

Messenger will make lead generation better for businesses. Messenger will support the integrated ability for customers to set appointments with businesses. There’s no need for an outside integration anymore. The creation of an appointment between business and customer will happen natively within Messenger.

Takeaway: Obviously, this is huge for businesses. Whether you’re scheduling a real estate showing, a personal training appointment, a hair styling session, or a restaurant reservation, appointment setting directly between business and customer will streamline and enhance the customer/business relationship.

Messenger is changing – from the very purpose of the app itself to its look and feel, it’s undergoing a thorough evolution.

Talking about how much marketing changes is platitudinous. We know it. We get it.

Let’s move on, right?

Yes, but right now, Facebook is turbid with change. And this is where we need to pay some attention. Stuff is dying! 

We’ve already disclosed Facebook’s shocking leadership melee, the immolation of Messenger scan codes, and the stuttering death of the News Feed, and now this — they’ve axed P2P payments.

What happened?! Facebook is killing off Messenger P2P payments in the UK and France.

The news is official. Facebook has declared that they are shutting down Messenger P2P payment ability for all users in the UK and France.

P2P Messenger payments are cool. It lets two individuals send money to each other easily, directly within the Messenger app.

How do P2P Messenger Payments work

P2P payments are still available for other countries. Only France and the UK are affected by this change.

It’s an odd reversal since Facebook started the service to the UK and France in November of 2017. Sure didn’t last very long.

Here’s what Facebook said about the change:

After evaluating how we give people the best experiences in Messenger, we made the decision to focus our efforts on experiences that people find most useful. Users have been notified in preparation for this change.

When does the end of P2P Messenger payments go into effect in France and the UK?
According to Facebook, the date is June 15, 2019.

Users have apparently had plenty of time to recover from the shock, commiserate with friends, dry their eyes, and look for new ways to transmit payment to friends.

Facebook’s it’s-not-you-it’s-me note was being distributed in early April and looked like this:

It’s straightforward: “A thing is happening. Thanks. We’re sorry.”

But why? WHY?!

Facebook Messenger is Changing

Messenger is at the center of Facebook’s business plan for the foreseeable future. 

So when a feature like P2P payments gets shuttled, it hits close to home. 

Why? Because P2P payments are a functionality of Facebook Messenger, similar to how scan codes were embedded in the heart of Facebook Messenger.

We’re witnessing yet another tremor in the Messenger ecosystem.

In the past few months, Facebook has fiddled with Messenger functionality, discussed its future, killed some feature, or otherwise messed with it. 

We know that Facebook Messenger and Facebook Messenger marketing is changing. We just don’t know what else will change. 

Here’s what hasn’t changed.

If you’re an eager P2P payment user anywhere outside of the UK or France, you’re untouched. Breathe easy. For now.

The rest of Europe can continue enjoying P2P payments on Messenger along with the United States, Canada, India, and elsewhere.

Additionally, UK and France users can still complete other financial transactions on Facebook. According to the official Facebook statement posted by Facebook (and republished by TechCrunch):

While you won’t be able to exchange money with friends and family, you’ll still be able to complete other transactions through Facebook, such as making donations to charitable organisations.

Why did Facebook do it?

And so we tiptoe our way into the exciting arena of wild speculation.

Frankly, we just don’t know why Facebook does what it does — why it pulled the plug on scan codes, why it pushed the News Feed over the cliff, and why they’re hiring a small sovereign nation of blockchain developers and lawyers.

One likely reason that Facebook shut down the service in France and the UK was that people just weren’t using it that much.

With Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, Circle Pay, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Square, Zelle, Xoom, Dowlla, Cash App, and, heck, “Here’s €10 for the pain au chocolat, mon amie!” perhaps P2P payments with Messenger just weren’t getting much traction.

But we can be fairly certain that whatever Facebook is doing, it has to do with almighty revenue — making it, saving it, or preparing to do one of the above.

In the speculative playground of my mind, one of the most intriguing possibilities is that Facebook will release a worldwide cryptocurrency to conduct all kinds of transactions — from ad spend, to comping my friend for lunch, to movie tickets, to purchasing a pair of sneakers.

If and when Facebook does hand the world a shiny new stablecoin, then the retrospective adieu of P2P functionality in France and the UK will make much more sense.

We have questions!

There are unanswered issues in the drawback of UK and France’s P2P services.

Here are a few of them:

  • Will this affect P2P payments in other countries?
  • Are P2P Messenger payments in the United States on the chopping block?
  • Is Facebook in some sort of legal trouble?
  • What about Facebook’s cryptocurrency?
  • Will Facebook someday replace P2P Messenger payments in France and the UK?
  • If so, will it be different from what it was in the past?

Perhaps there’s one big question on everyone’s mind: 

What will be dumped in the Facebook graveyard next?

It’s not as if Mark Zuckerberg is storming down the halls of the office looking to zap more features and functionality.

Facebook is a business. They’re out to make a buck! They want nice, big, up-and-to-right revenue charts to show to their investors and employees.

The company is still rife with potential, power, and full-orbed capabilities. Stuff will come and stuff will go. The company will change, but some things will always remain.

And that’s what comforts my marketing heart.

Facebook Messenger marketing remains strong.

This statement of fact has been all but guaranteed both in Zuckerberg’s own statements and in the expanding features of Messenger marketing. Of those features, the chatbot power is enormous.

14 Surprising Predictions about Facebook Messenger Marketing You Need to Know Right Away

When it comes to Facebook Messenger chatbots, we as marketers are in the thick of it. We’re devising Messenger strategies, assembling chatbot sequences, and racking up wins for our companies and clients.

But what’s the future of Facebook chatbot marketing? We have some predictions.

Crystal balls not being readily available at the time of writing, I made these predictions based on data, trends, and history (the “repeats itself” bit). We’re not a rumor blog, so there’s none of that here.

Here are 14 predictions — some possibly surprising — about Facebook Messenger marketing and chatbots.

1. Chatbots will outperform any other marketing channel.

I thought we’d start out with an easy one.

Prognostications aside, this is a present fact.

I don’t have an accurate way to measure all the marketing channels known to humankind, adjust for all differences, and create an eternal and irrefutable decree.

But I do know that Messenger open rates and engagement levels completely outstrip any other marketing tactic or channel that I’ve used.

2. More businesses will sell goods and services directly in Messenger.

If you’ve ever created a Messenger chatbot or played around in Messenger, you know that it’s a powerful platform. It’s not just messaging. It’s everything.

And, as Messenger expands both its user base and functionality, it’s going to become easier for businesses and customers to transact directly within the app.

Businesses are always looking for ways to sell their products easier, with fewer contingent costs, complications, and overhead. Messenger will present itself as a powerful way to do this.

Whether it’s a business offering a consulting retainer agreement or a custom-built snowboard, Messenger will make it happen.

3. Facebook Messenger will add enormous functionality to business messaging.

What we’ve observed through the Facebook shakeup, the implosion of the News Feed, and the sundry proclamations of Zuckerberg is that Facebook is laser-focused on expanding and improving Messenger.

It’s like Christmas morning for businesses.

Why? Because the monetary beneficiaries of Messenger are businesses.

Messenger chatbots are already enormously powerful, but their capability is set to grow as Facebook lavishes businesses with more messaging autonomy, freedom, capability, and features.

4. Businesses will divert funds from conventional display ads, and will spend more on click-to-Messenger ads.

Many businesses have wised up to the fact that traditional display ads have withered up.

Facebook advertising isn’t dead. Yet. But it sure doesn’t dish out ROI like it used to.

Because of this, more businesses will use their advertising dollar to purchase click-to-Messenger ads. In doing so, they stand to benefit from more long-term engagement with customers, a growing Messenger contact list, and lower CPA.

5. Building a Facebook Messenger contact list will become a high priority for businesses.

Facebook reach is dead. Email efficacy is waning.

The new thing on the scene is Facebook Messenger contact lists.

I’ll be blunt. Website chat widgets are an absolute waste. Unless it’s a Messenger chatbot widget.

Here’s my logic. The marketing value of engaging a proprietary chatbot on a business website ends once the chat ends. The customer is gone. The interaction is over. You don’t have a name. You don’t have an email. It’s a one-and-done. And that’s it.

Consider, by contrast, a Messenger chatbot widget. When a potential customer opens up a Messenger conversation from your website, they are a contact in perpetuity.

You know their name. You’ve got their information. You can send them chat blasts. You can segment them. You can retarget them. You can send them a drip campaign. The chat history remains active on their phone or desktop.

That sheer logic is why we’re seeing a rapid increase in the downloads of the leading WordPress chatbot plugin, the WP Chatbot.

Businesses realize that it’s worthwhile to engage users on their website using Facebook tools since that’s how customers prefer to interact. Plus, it does not create an undue burden upon customer service, since the messaging is entirely bot-driven.

Gartner famously predicted that by 2020, the majority, 80%, of customer/business interactions will be handled by AI. In other words, chatbots.

9. Early adopters of Facebook chatbot marketing will outpace late-adopting or non-adopting competitors.

To sprinkle a little dog-eat-dog brutishness in this article, I now declare that Messenger chatbot early adopters will rule the marketing scene.

I say this, not because I happen to work for a startup that benefits from the increased uptake of Messenger marketing, but because it’s true.

10. More individuals and influencers will create Business Pages and start using Messenger chatbots in their marketing.

The rise of the influencer industry has shaped many marketing trends.

Many of these influencers are happy to stick with Instagram alone, since doing yoga in Tulum or Mykonos is just so Instagram-worthy.

And since chatbots are only available to Business Pages, more of these influencers will start their a Page and use chatbots.

11. Chatbots will be functional across three platforms — WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger.

You probably already know that Facebook is merging Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

What this probably means is that soon we — chatbot savvy marketers — will be able to create one chatbot sequence and release it simultaneously to users on all three platforms.

This move will expand the audience reach of chatbots, and it will probably mean a reconfiguration of how Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram messages look and feel. (See my next prediction.)

12. The Messenger interface will change.

I don’t envy the developers who are trying to stitch together Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram. I don’t code, but I imagine that the integration of the three would be a daunting task.

As the messaging components of the three apps are integrated, it’s probably going to mean that each of the three user interfaces will change.

The comfortable and stable WhatsApp screen will shift. Familiar Messenger swipe patterns will change. And Instagram’s messaging features will probably get a facelift.

Each of the apps has messaging capabilities that aren’t available on the others. These may not disappear, but they will most likely shift to adapt to the merge.

13. Facebook will introduce measures to add a monetization model to businesses using Messenger.

This prediction is just business logic.

Facebook is a business. Businesses make money.

Right now, it’s evident that Messenger is the future of Facebook. Apart from click-to-Messenger ads, there’s not a whole lot of monetization going on in the Messenger world.

When I’m marketing my business using Messenger, I don’t pay Facebook to make chatbot sequences, send chat blasts, or grow my contact list. It’s all free!

Meanwhile, revenue from display ads are starting to go flat. Axios made this report a few months ago:

Executives have been warning investors for months that these ads are nearing a growth ceiling on its main app. And analysts say engagement on Facebook’s main app (where it sells most of these ads) is declining, which puts even more pressure on the tech giant to quickly find new sources of revenue.

“New sources of revenue,” you say? There’s gold in them thar Messenger hills.

Somehow, someway, Facebook will begin to make money from the businesses who are growingly dependent on Messenger.

What will this look like specifically? It’s too early to tell, especially since Messenger’s functionality is still in flux.

First, Facebook needs to create a dependency upon Messenger. At that point, the business development experts at 1 Hacker Way will have a big meeting and start testing their ideas.

At some point, expect that Facebook will begin to take a monetary share of all that success you’re experiencing with Messenger marketing.

14. Facebook will develop a cryptocurrency that allows users to easily transact goods, products, services within the Facebook ecosystem.

Full disclosure: The monkey is at risk of compromising the integrity of the limb on this one, but it makes for an interesting thought. And, yes, I do have reputable news sources linked below, like Bloomberg.

So here’s where I’m coming from.

Did you know that Facebook has an entire blockchain division? The company began aggressively hiring blockchain experts in late 2017 or early 2018. According to various news outlets, the blockchain division stands at around 40 strong and is growing.

An undisclosed deal took place early in 2019 in which Facebook acquired a London-based blockchain company, Chainspace, expanding the company’s blockchain talent and research pool.

As of April 22, 2019, Facebook was hiring for 25 blockchain-related positions — from attorneys to security engineers located in offices from Menlo Park (mostly) to Tel Aviv.

Some news sources call this “mysterious,” but it’s rather vanilla flavored. Of course, a behemoth company wants to dip its toe into the burgeoning field of cryptocurrency. Mark Zuckerberg is open about that.

But there’s a twist.

The VP of Facebook Messenger until last year was David A. Marcus, a brilliant entrepreneur and all-around genius who definitely looks nothing like George Clooney.

What is Marcus good at, besides everything?

For starters, he was the former president of PayPal. And he once founded a mobile media monetization firm. And he also founded a company that facilitated mobile phone payments. And then he helped Facebook acquire Braintree, which invented Venmo. And then he invented Messenger’s P2P payment platform. And then he was appointed to the board of directors at Coinbase.

All of that definitely sounds cryptocurrency-ish to me.

Now, and definitely not by coincidence, he’s running Facebook’s blockchain division.

Cleary, there is plenty of mixing-and-mingling between Messenger technology and blockchain innovation, since the former head of Messenger is now playing with blockchain technology.

Evidently, Facebook has made some progress. Already, they have a stablecoin that is designed to allow Whatsapp transfers in India. This move signals the fact that Facebook has the capability and interest in pushing this technology farther.

Some bloggers have given the stablecoin a name — FacebookCoin. (Hmm. Prosaic.)

A Facebook representative remarked, “Like many other companies, Facebook is exploring ways to leverage the power of blockchain technology. This new small team is exploring many different applications.”

It’s not a far leap from “exploring many different applications” to having a cryptocurrency that is intrinsically tied to the Messenger platform.

But alas, as the Facebook representative concluded, “We don’t have anything further to share.”

Predictions are hit-and-miss.

A few months from now, I may want to pull this article in shame. Or, with I-told-you-so zeal, I may want to promote the heck out of it.

  3. Point-based pricing. The point-based model adds charges based on additional functionalities, drips, blasts, and integrations. The more the client wants, the more it costs.
